Getting Underway …

Down in Abidjan, one of the first meetings we had was with a Captain in the Operation Licorne, the French Armed Forces peacekeeping operation in Cote d’Ivoire.

By wonderful coincidence, the very day the Founder and I arrived in Abengourou was the same day a Licorne patrol also came to town to do some community work at a local school, and the patrol leader kindly met with us to discuss CREER’s work. Upon his return to the base, he very generously passed along this information to his superiors and arranged a meeting for us at which we were able to formally introduce CREER’s goals, plans and staff. This, in turn, lead the Founder to a meeting between the Colonel in command of the entire operation and opened the door to what would soon become a very supportive friendship for CREER!

While the founder made her way back home, I returned to Abengourou as the building works on our centre really got underway. Dirt floors were replaced with cement. Brick walls were strengthened and covered over. Windows, doors and screens were installed. Holes in the roof were repaired and missing ceilings were put in place. We had the building wired for electricity and connected to the water supply. Slowly, the exciting transformation was taking place …

Windows and doors where once were holes!

Gone are the dirt floors and brick walls in favour of cement.
